陈宇晖 (Danny Chen)（May 26, 1992 – October 3, 2011) was an American U.S. Army soldier who served in Afghanistan in the early 21st century whose death resulted in a military investigation and charges against eight US soldiers, ultimately with four being court martialed. The investigation found that Chen had been racially harassed, teased, bullied, and mercilessly beaten by his fellow soldiers before his death on October 3, 2011.
In the years following Danny Chen’s death, the Army has made changes to its regulations. Among those were a revision to regulations in 2014 that include “an Army definition for hazing and bullying, reporting procedures, command and individual responsibilities, and guidance on treatment of persons”; an annual prevention of hazing training requirement for soldiers; and the tracking of hazing and bullying as of last October, with incidents between 2006 and 2013 reported as crimes to law enforcement.
New York City Councilwoman Margaret Chin, who represents Chinatown, spoke at a press conference “we cannot allow this to happen to our sons and daughters. This is our country and we want to serve… but we expect them to be treated equally and fairly and to be protected,”
