Richard Song’s Bio:
My name is Richard Song. I’m a graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (TJ) and will be attending Vanderbilt University in the fall with a full-ride merit scholarship. Public Forum (PF) Debate was my primary extracurricular activity at TJ: I was part of TJ’s PF team for four years and served as the team’s Captain in my Senior year. Some of my notable achievements in debate include co-championing at the Virginia State debate tournament, being the highest-ranked team in Virginia in my junior year, and breaking to the elimination rounds of various competitive national debate tournaments such as the National Speech and Debate Association (NSDA) tournament and the Harvard National Forensics Tournament. During all of my high school summers, I also operated my own debate camp called Wisdom Debate Academy, in which I taught over 120 students from grades four through nine nationwide.
Seminar Brief:
Through my seminar, I hope to discuss four topics. First, I will share my speech and debate journey and explain how debate has positively impacted me. Second, I will talk about the different forms of debate as well as which debate event best suits a particular student. Third, I will elaborate on the types of debate opportunities students can pursue such as local tournaments, national tournaments, and camps. Finally, I will reflect upon what it takes to successfully lead a debate team.
