【4/11/2021】CAPA NoVA Distinguished Chinese American Project

(Written by: Jing Bai)

马友友(Yo-Yo Ma) is a world renowned cellist with over 100 albums, including 18 Grammy Awards that span a variety of music genres. He was born in 1955 in Paris to Chinese parents, who were both musicians. His family later moved to the US and lived in New York City. As a child prodigy, he started to perform from the age of four. He was educated at Juilliard and later graduated from Harvard University with an anthropology degree.

Just as his name “Yo” ( 友) indicates in Chinese – friendship, Yo-Yo Ma is passionate about people and humanity. From concert halls to local festivals, he delivers sounds that transcend boarders and languages, and connect people from every walk of life. Yo-Yo Ma created the Silk Road Ensemble to bring the musicians together from countries along the Silk Road that linked the East and the West. Through his Bach project, he started a journey with his cello to communicate Bach’s music to the world and explore how culture connects us.
