李安 (Ang Lee), born in Southern Taiwan in 1954, has become an internationally acclaimed film director, producer, and screenwriter. Throughout his filmmaking career, Lee has been constantly moving back and forth between Eastern and Western cultures and directed both Chinese films and major English-language productions. Lee’s life experience lends unique perspective and freshness to traditional storytelling. Much of Lee’s work is known for its diversity of genres, exploration of hidden emotions and focus on the common themes between cultures. Lee has been nominated for nine academy awards, of which he has won three: Best Foreign Language Film for Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon and Best Director for Brokeback Mountain and Life of Pi, becoming the first non-white director to win the latter.
